Floatation Tank Directory

Welcome to Float Finder, the internet's only map-based directory of floatation tank centers. You may have visited other sites to find only dead links and outdated information. Not here! We keep our site updated on a regular basis, working with the float tank community to bring you the best floating resource site on the web. Please visit often (and sign up for our monthly newsletter) as we add new content frequently.

Floatation tanks* are a modern health and wellness tool enjoyed by thousands of people worldwide. How do they work? Floating inside a float tank frees the body from the strains of gravity and external stimuli, triggering a powerful reflex inside the brain, causing both the mind and body to enter into a relaxed state. What do float tanks look like? For pictures of tanks, click the links in the Tank Manufacturers section. Where can you try one out? Well, that's what we're here for! Check the maps above for a location near you. Have more questions? No problem. Consult the floating FAQ or send us an email.

Floating is many things to many people; we think of floating as a massage for the mind, body and spirit. Floaters often testify to the positive effect floating has had on their lives, and dozens of scientific studies demonstrate the way in which floating promotes good health and well-being (see our Scientific Research section for a list of journal articles). People enjoy floating because of the profound relaxation and deep sense of personal awareness that come from a single float or a series of float tank sessions. People often enter the float tank feeling stressed-out, tired and unmotivated, yet they leave feeling relaxed, alert and refreshed. People who own their own tank report that daily floats keep them in a good mood and full of energy. The occasional float can work wonders as well. Float tank center owners are always pleased to see customers leaving smiling, glowing and ready for the rest of their day.

Floating will leave you deeply relaxed. How deep, you ask? Well, for starters, research has shown that the brain activity during floating is nearly identical to the elevated states of consciousness experienced by trained Buddhist monks during meditation. Now that's relaxation!

*Float tanks are also known by the following clinical terms: isolation tanks, sensory attenuation tanks and sensory deprivation tanks. Floating is the premier form of REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulus Therapy).

(continued)

The first floatation tank was developed in the 1950s by research scientist Dr. John C. Lilly, under the auspices of the National Institute of Mental Health in the United States. Since that time, dozens of studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of floatation therapy at reducing stress levels, improving athletic performance, providing relief from injuries, back pain and other body aches, providing relief during pregnancy, enhancing creativity and visual imagery, reducing anxiety, helping people to quit smoking,  . . . and the list goes on (see our Scientific Research section for a bibliography).

The Float Finder directory lists float centers, wellness centers, spas, resorts, doctor's offices, home businesses and other entities which offer floatation tank services around the world. We strive to bring you to the most complete directory possible; the information on this site is updated regularly. The benefits of floating are many, and if you are a newcomer to floating, please review the menu on the left to find out more about this amazing relaxation therapy!
